Materials and Tools List: Before you begin, gather these essential supplies. Proper preparation is key to a smooth build.
  • Lumber:
    • (2) 4x4 posts 8 feet long (for legs)
    • (6) 2x4 boards 8 feet long (for frame and bracing)
    • (3) Sheets of ¾-inch plywood 4x8 feet (for the top and bottom shelf)
  • Hardware:
    • 3-inch wood screws
    • 2-inch wood screws
    • Wood glue
    • (4) Heavy-duty swivel casters with brakes (at least 3-inch wheels)
    • (16) T-nuts (to attach casters)
    • Bolts and washers (to attach casters to T-nuts)
  • Tools:
    • Circular saw or table saw
    • Miter saw (optional but recommended)
    • Drill/driver
    • Sander
    • Measuring tape
    • Pencil
    • Clamps
    • Safety glasses
    • Hearing protection
Step 1: Cut the Lumber Precise cuts are crucial for a stable workbench. Follow these measurements:
  • Legs: Cut the 4x4 posts into (4) 34-inch lengths.
  • Long Frame Pieces: Cut (2) 2x4s into 82-inch lengths.
  • Short Frame Pieces: Cut (2) 2x4s into 22-inch lengths.
  • Lower Frame Pieces: Cut (2) 2x4s into 79-inch lengths.
  • Center Support: Cut (2) 2x4s into 22-inch lengths.
  • Bottom Shelf Supports: Cut (2) 2x4s into 79-inch lengths.
  • Plywood:
    • Top: Cut one sheet of plywood to 24 x 82 inches.
    • Bottom Shelf: Cut one sheet of plywood to 24 x 82 inches.
Step 2: Assemble the Workbench Frame This step involves building the main support structure.
  • Build the top frame by connecting the 82-inch and 22-inch 2x4s using wood glue and 3-inch screws. Ensure the corners are square. Use clamps to hold the pieces together while the glue dries.
  • Attach the legs to the inside corners of the top frame, using wood glue and 3-inch screws. Ensure they are flush with the top of the frame.
  • Attach the lower frame pieces (79-inch 2x4s) to the legs, approximately 6 inches from the bottom, using wood glue and 3-inch screws. This will form the base for the bottom shelf.
  • Attach the center support (22-inch 2x4s) between the lower frame pieces, centered along the 82-inch length. Secure with wood glue and 3-inch screws.
  • Attach the bottom shelf supports (79-inch 2x4s) to the legs, halfway between the lower frame and the top frame. Secure with wood glue and 3-inch screws.
Step 3: Add the Bottom Shelf and Top Now, you'll add the plywood surfaces.
  • Place the bottom shelf plywood (24 x 82 inches) onto the lower frame. Secure it to the frame and center support with 2-inch screws.
  • Place the top plywood (24 x 82 inches) onto the top frame. Secure it with 2-inch screws. Ensure the edges are flush with the frame.
Step 4: Install the Casters This step transforms your workbench into a mobile powerhouse.
  • Invert the workbench.
  • Attach the T-nuts to the bottom of each leg, centered. Make sure they are flush with the surface of the wood. You may need to drill pilot holes first.
  • Attach the swivel casters to the legs using bolts and washers, securing them into the T-nuts. Ensure the casters are securely fastened and can swivel freely.
Step 5: Sanding and Finishing (Optional) This step enhances the workbench's appearance and protects the wood.
  • Sand all surfaces of the workbench, paying particular attention to edges and corners, to remove splinters and create a smooth finish.
  • Apply a finish of your choice, such as polyurethane or varnish, to protect the wood from moisture and wear. Allow the finish to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Conclusion: Your Mobile Workbench is Ready! Congratulations! You've built a sturdy and mobile workbench. This DIY project provides a versatile workspace that can be easily moved around your shop. Enjoy your new workbench and the increased efficiency it brings to your projects! Remember to always practice safety while working with power tools.
